Arrowtown Borough Council

The monthly meeting of the Arrowtown Borough Council was attended by the Mayor, Mr E. T. Thompson, Crs Saunders, Patterson, Stapp, Henderson and Reed. Apologies from Crs Shaw and Cowie were received.

Mr Jas. Shaw, the borough’s representative on the Central Otago Power Board, furnished a report of the Power Board’s meeting held on April 20, # and reading from this report it would appear that the chances of getting the light into the camping ground before winter are very remote.

The Mayor, Cr Stapp, and the town clerk were appointed to deal with the Power Board’s reply when same arrives. It was resolved to contact the Power Board’s representative at Queenstown and request that the time switch for the street lighting be set at an earlier hour.

The secretary of the Cromwell branch of the Homo Servicemen’s Association wrote protesting at the hall charges.—To be informed that the charges have been operating for years, and that the council cannot deal with a protest which is four months, late in being submitted. The lion, secretary of the Historical Committee, Mr E. E. Hopwood, wrote requesting a progress payment of £lO towards the funds. —Granted.

The assistant Under-secretary of Internal Affairs advised that a grant of £75 had been made towards playing facilities for children to be erected at the Domain, It was decided that prices for these facilities would be obtained.

The dayman, Mr T. A. Shaw, applied for an increase in the horse allowance owing to the high price of chaff. —The council were unable to accede to this request, but are prepared to allow for feed of extra horse when grading is being done.

It was decided to procure builder’s paper to place under the iron on the lean-to of the cottage, but the council are not prepared to install an open fireplace in place of the stove in the sitting room.

Messrs Cowie and King’s tender for alterations and improvements to the Librarv was accepted.

Mr J. W. Miller accepted the appointment as assessor for the borough. Particulars of the sealed-pan service were requested from the Riverton Borough Council.- —Particulars to be furnished.

The engineer, Public Works Department, Mr Watt, considered that the oiling of the main highway through Arrow town should be held over till after the winter. —It was resolved that oil be procured in readiness, for*laying in the spring.

The council’s opinion regarding the suggested conference to discuss matters pertaining to camping areas was asked by the Otago Automobile Association. —The council is in favour of a conference being held, and will elect a delegate, and consider Alexandra the most suitable place to hold same.

The transfer of borough sections from Mrs Reid to the Golf Club was agreed to.

Arising from correspondence from the Otago Catchment Board, it was resolved that a roll of ratepayers be prepared. The condition of the concrete steps at the hall was reported by the chairman of the Hall Committee, Cr Henderson. It was decided that expert advice be obtained as to wavs and means of

repairing. It was resolved that the whole of sections 1 and 2, blocklll, be leased to Mr Win. Nairn.

A special meeting was called for Monday, May 3, to discuss the seventyfifth anniversary programme. Accounts to £l6 9s 7d were passed for payment.
