Lake Hawea Scheme

Last Wednesday evening a public, meeting was held at the Hawea Hall to discuss the proposed raising of Lake Hawea. Mr G. L. Burden, who presided, was very much in favour of the proposed scheme at Black Jack’s Point on tire Waitaki river being proceeded with before the Coal Creek scheme.

A.great deal of keen discussion took place, and while all present realised the urgent need for hydro-electric development, many questioned the practicability of damming the lake on account of the porous nature of the ground. It was suggested that the possibility of lowering the outlet of the lake should be thoroughly investigated.

There was. general dissatisfaction that the settlers had not been acquainted with the proposals and it was hoped that Mr Semple or one of his responsible officers would meet the people concerned at an early date and give them some details of the proposal.
