Truck Overturns at Victoria Bridge

DRIVER FATALLY BURNED A large lorry, driven by the sole occupant, Richard Stevenson, sawmiller, of Gibbston, Kawarau Gorge, left the road near Victoria Bridge on the Crom-well-Queenstown road in the early hours on Sunday morning, mounted a bank, capsized, and caught fire, badly burning the driver. A nearby resident, Mr Chalmers, came to the rescue and extricated Stevenson. The rescuer suffered slight burns.

Stevenson was taken to the Cromwell Hospital and died of his burns yesterday. The road was completely blocked till mid-day. Bus services on the Queenstown-Wanaka round trip were suspended. Stevenson was a married man, aged 33.

Accidents at Cromwell When crossing the main street last Saturday afternoon, Mrs Lawrie, of Cromwell, was struck by a passing car. She was later taken out to the hospital where her condition is satisfactory.

Accident in Nevis Bannockburn Resident Injured When Mr Allan Campbell, jnr, of Bannockburn, was helping to load a truck in Nevis, he sustained .a broken leg, and had to be admitted to the Cromwell Hospital where his condition is satisfactory.
