Opening Matches Of Rugby Season
Rugby football in the Vincent Subunion opened last when Cromwell Seniors and Juniors travelled to Queenstown for friendly games with local teams. Results: —
Seniors Queenstown, 14: — A, Saunders (2 tries), R. Anderson (1 try converted and a penalty goal). Cromwell, 6: — C. Perriam 1 try and W, Stevens 1 try.
Juniors Queenstown 4. W. Anderson, field goal. Cromwell 3. J. Auld, penalty goal. Pine weather attracted a good crowd to the ground and players turned out in good numbers. Cromwell had 21 Senior players present which gave an opportunity for
the coach to try players at varying positions. The play was of the usual first of the season standard but it could be seen that when players become fit and have had a few practices there will be some Eugby worth seeing this year. A fully reported game would not on this occasion serve any purpose, but several players who were prominent by their consistent good standard of play should be mentioned.
Greater honours will undoubtedly come to Queenstown’s junior full-back J. O’Connell.
His was perhaps the best display of football seen on the field last Saturday. Apart from his accurate line-kicking sound handling and good positional play it is to be hoped that senior players will learn a lesson from his tackling. A. Saunders, who scored two tries for the Queenstown seniors proved that he was an elusive back who had plenty of pace.
Always on the ball for the Cromwell team were J. Webb, W. Stevens, C. •Perriam and J. Shell.
Criticism of play in these first games ■of the season would not be approjuiate.

RANFURLY SHIELD
Alterations to Rules
RUGBY COUNCIL'S PROPOSALS A number of important alterations to the rules for the Ranfurly Shield competition which are to be proposed by the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union came before the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union on Monday night.
Among them is a proposal that in place of the rule providing for all special challenge matches to be played on the grounds of the holder, except in the event of the shield being held by a union for two consecutive seasons, the provision should apply to all challenge matches. Any such union, however, should have the right of deciding whether any matches played on tour should be shield matches.
A proposal will also be submitted that in all matches for the the referee should be appointed by the New Zealand Rugby Football Union and the reasonable expenses of the referee should be paid out of the net proceeds of the game. An additional rule which is to be the subject of a motion is that in ali special challenge matches for the shield, the challenging union, in default of agreement between the challenging union and the challenged union, should be entitled so far as the proceeds of the special match would allow (and after the payment of all actual ground charges, etc.) to reasonable expenses, not exceeding 50 per cent, of the net gate, incurred by the challenging union in playing the match, any balance of such proceeds to belong to the union challenged.
The council will also move that a special challenge match be regarded as one where the challenging union had issued a challenge to play a special match for the shield, which otherwise would not be played in the course of ordinary interprovincial matches. '
The proposed alterations were noted for the consideration of the Otago Union’s delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Union.
