Queenstown Organisation Moves To Answer Distress Appeal

There are 800,000,000 children under 15 years of age in the world; half of these are underfed, and 230,000,000 are on the verge of starvation.

This was stated by the Mayor, Dr W. A. Anderson, in addressing a public meeting of citizens held in the Garrison Hall on Tuesday of last week. The occasion was for the organisation of a local collection campaign which is to be conducted in May in conjunction with a Dominion-wide appeal. Unfortunately there was only a moderate attendance of citizens at the meeting.

Anderson and V. A. Bianchi. Mr M. T. Robertson will act as secretary and treasurer of the Queenstown organisation and Mr E. R. Hopwood for Lake County. The matter of some system of collection of funds and a badge to be worn by contributors was referred to the committees.

The Mayor, Dr Anderson, was in the chair, and was supported by Or McLean, Lake County Council, and Mr E. R. Hopwood, county clerk. The reasons and objects of the appeal and the seriousness of the call was stressed by the Mayor. He spoke of the economical and social character of

the organisation. Arrangements were made to hold a march of school children on Friday, May 7, as the school vacation starts on the 10th. The purpose of this march is to arouse public interest. Points put before the meeting for the raising of funds were: Street appeals, telephone calling, person-to-person appeals, and activities of women’s committees.

A contribution of one day’s wages is to be asked of the citizens.
