Historical Information Wanted for Lake County Publication

120,000 WORD BOOK PROPOSED Good progress is being made by Mr F. Miller, chief reporter of the Southland Daily News, in composing the history of Lake County for the Lake County Historical Committee. This was shown when Mr Miller presented a report of his achievements to date to a meeting held in the Council Chambers last Tuesday night. “People who may have any information concerning the early days in the county are requested to notify any member of the committee. The task of accumulating facts is a tremendous, one and it is only with utmost co-operation in this way that Mr Miller can be expected to complete his work within a reasonable time,” stated the chairman, Mr D. H. Cockburn. He had found that few people had kept any written records, so that research work became fairly involved, said Mr Miller. The task was much greater than he had anticipated. Mr A. C. Cameron, chairman of the Otago Centennial Committee advised that they would be prepared to publish the book as one of their centennial publications and suggested that it be limited to 80,000 words. Mr Miller had estimated that it would be necessary to publish a book of about 120,000 words to cover the history satisfactorily. “ Our desire is to have a history of our county; it seems' that it is the Centennial Committee’s desire to make all the centennial publications about the same size,” said Mr F. B. Hopwood. Mr Miller pointed out that other centennial publications did not have such history as this county could offer. Gold mining history on its own could fill a book of that size. It was decided to ask the Centennial Committee to give consideration to this factor.
