Loyal Upper Clutha Lodge Monthly Meeting
The monthly meeting of the Loyal Upper Clutha Lodge was held in the lodge room on Thursday evening, and a social hour was spent at the conclusion of the meeting. The guest of the evening was Bro. Elliott. who has since left the district. In proposing the toast to the guest the N.G., Bro. Maekay, made reference tp the outstanding work of Bro. Elliott during his three years in office as permanent secretary, and presented him with a fountain pen on behalf of the Lodge members, and wished he and Mrs. Elliott every success in their new sphere. During the evening items were given by Bro. D. Templeton, P.G. Bro. Studholme and Bro. H. Kingan.
Brittingham, the opening batsman, made the team’s only duck going out on the fourth ball in the same way as he has done in his last four games —caught! Top score of 27 was made by Partridge, who except for a three, made it all in ones and twos. Good steady hitting. Taking them as they came, the scores were: — J. Brittingham, c Johnston, b Reid, 0; N. Christopher, b Reid, 7; W. Anderson, Ibw, b Johnston, 15; McKechnie, b Reid, 20; H. Templeton, c Rollings, b Reid, 9; F. Partridge, b Reid 27; G. Lonsdale, b Gillespie 18; Fell, c Johnston, b Kane, 2; B. Grant, run out, 11; G. Forbes, not out, 11; Marshall, b Reid, C; Muir 8. Bowling for Hawea: —Reid, four for 37; Gillespie, one for 8; Kane, one for 14. Bowling for Queenstown: —Brittingham, five for 55; Anderson, two for 1; McKechnie, two for 17; Fell, one for 7; Partridge, one for 27.
The borough’s tender for buildings in the estate of W. J. Jenkins Avas not accepted. The Medical Officer of Health requested to know the number of copies of the Health Regulations that would be required. In regard to the Give A Day, Millions Hungry Appeal for Children, it was decided that a public meeting be held on April 6. The Wangarei Council to be thanked for forwarding programmes and booklets of their jubilee. It was decided that the charge for meetings held in the Council Chambers be 4s. The Mayor moved and Cr Henderson seconded that letters, strongly protesting at the power board’s action in using five hardwood poles to carry power to one consumer occupying a summer residence when the reticulation of the Borough Extension and Domain have been held up owing to shortage of poles, be sent to the Power Board, and the borough’s representative on the board. The chairman of the Works Committee submitted his report which was adopted. The attention of ratepayers is drawn to the fact that it is illegal to dump rubbish, discarded concrete blocks or refuse of any description on the roadlines or footpaths anywhere within the borough. In order to assist in checking the hall cups for breakages, etc., it was resolved that trays be made to hold three or four dozen. Accounts amounting to £74 17s 9d were passed for payment. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting. DOMAIN BOARD The committee’s action in abandoning the gymkhana was endorsed, and any loss which may have occurred through the cancellation is to be borne by the board.
