Nominated for Hurdles Benbecula, who was a runner in the Riverton Cup on Saturday last, figures amongst the list of nominations for the Southern Hurdles Handicap to be run at the Southland meeting on April 10. Great Western Steeplechase When Irish Wit, who was a pronounced favourite for the event, failed to negotiate the first fence in the Great Western Steeplechase the race was robbed of a lot of its interest as this dashing jumper was expected to set a solid pace out in front. His stable-mate, Ballyaggan, also failed to race up to expectations. Roxburgh Trotting Club The only race meeting on the southern circuit this week will be the Roxburgh non-totalisator trotting meeting to be held on the club’s grounds at Roxburgh on Saturday. Given a fine day lovers of the light harness horse can be assured of excellent racing as the card has filled well. Some splendid contests have been witnessed at this popular Central Otago trotting fixture in the past and as this year’s fields compare very favourably with those of other years trotting enthusiasts should be rewarded with a good day’s sport. Fought on Weil The manner in which Heroic Girl fought on to gain second place behind Sal’s Pal at Riverton on Saturday suggests that she wilV win a middle distance event before the present racing season ends. Highest Stake Earners Highland Fling, who won a double at. Addington on Saturday, has now earned £22,055, being only a few pounds behind Emulous’s record total. Double Light Judged on his recent performances Double Light should keep the Hazlett stable well in the limelight during the present jumping season. Brilliant Trotter Bingendale stamped himself as one of the most' impressive trotters seen out in Southland for some time when he scored two convincing wins at the recent Wyudham meeting. He will in all probability be seen out again at the Forbury Park centennial meeting on April 24. New Venture A feature of the first day’s racing at Beaumont was the splendid performance of New Venture in the Centennial Trot Handicap. Starting from 48 yards behind he quickly made up his handicap and over the last furlong he came away to win comfortably by 'a length and a-half from the favourite Woodstock in the good time of 3min 27sec. This Dillon Hall four-year-old should win again before the end of the present season. Riverton Winner Bayboa who won the Trial Handicap on the first day at Riverton and returned her backers an outsize in dividends is a three-year-old full sister to that good performer, Naughty Lady. Haughty Winner, their sire, was a very speedy sort a feAv seasons back and he seems to be passing his speed on to his offspring. Promising Young Sire Haughty Lyric, who Avon at Beaumont and Bayboa and Winning Thorn which were also successful at Riverton are all sired by Haughty Winner. Easy Win Siegform who has been racing consistently of late scored a very easy Avin in the Easier Handicap at Beaumont. Great Western Winner Eleanor Star the winner of the Great Western Steeplechase at Rivertoai is an aged bay gelding by Silver Chair out of Eleanor Boling and is trained at Riverton by J. Thistleton.
