Chief Postmaster Recognises Queenstown’s Health Stamp Record
Health stamp sales for Southland for the 1947-48 campaign, which ended an February 28, totalled £3309, which was £761 in excess of the total of- £2548 achieved in the 1946-47 year. Referring to the increase in Southland figures, Mr T. F. Thornton, the chief postmaster, said that the increase reflected the excellent support given to the campaign by the people of Southland, even although the sales unfortunately were £268 below the quota of £3577 set for the province to attain. “At some of the post offices the sales were exceptionally good and especially can this be said of Queenstown, where sales amounted to £233. Queenstown had a target of £55, but the first day’s sales alone amounted to £lB7. The effort of this town was easily the best of any in Southland. Another very fine effort was that of Otautau. The target set for this town was £BO and .the amount raised was £212.” The success of the campaign was in many cases the result of the co-opera-tion of the women’s organisations, he said. This was understandable, as there was no doubt that it was the women of the Dominion who appreciated mostly the great work the health camps were doing. “ The sales in Southland this year will mean an amount of £llO3 being made available to carry on the work of the health camps,” he added.
