DUCKS BANDED BY
WILDLIFE OFFICER Request to Sportsmen Last year an officer of the Wildlife Branch, while carrying out a waterfowl investigation, banded mallard, grey and spoonbill ducks in the vicinity of Palmerston North. In view of the fact that some of the ducks last year travelled considerable distances into adjoining districts, the Department of Internal Affairs, in a letter to the Southland Acclimatisation Society, received at a meeting of the society recently, requested that all sportsmen in Southland should be acquainted with the fact that ducks bearing an aluminium band on their leg, were awing and could be shot during the coming season. If any such band came into the possession of a sportsman, then it should be sent either to the Department of Internal Affairs or, if possible, to an acclimatisation society, secretary or ranger, giving the date and place where the band was retrieved.
Week-end Fishing— ' No Large Quinnat
Last week-end conditions were ideal for fishing and a few parties of fishermen visited the mouth of the Matukituki River. On party landed a number of the small land-locked quinnat and other larger fish, but none of the large quinnat were caught. Other parties landed several nice fish including rainbow. Whitebait are now running well and the season promises to be a much better one than has been the case for a few years, as the shoals are larger and running more frequently this season.
