TWO SUCCESSFUL
The Lake Comity A. and P. Society held their thirty-third annual show at Lake Hayes on Wednesday, March 17. The entries this year compared favourably with previous fixtures but the gate taking’s were not so high. The introduction of petrol rationing no doubt stopped many from attending this very popular event.
There was only a small entry of heavy horses but the hackney classes were very well filled, making for rings comparable with those seen at any show in Central Otago, Though the sheep sections were not numerically strong, some very good sheep were forward. Owen Gray, of Winton, won the champion prizes for the best ewe and ram in the Romney Marsh section. The first prize and champion Southdown ram was well developed and evoked favourable comment. Crossbred sheep, as a rule, were in good condition, though in some pens there was rather much 'tip on the wool, stated the judge. Having regard to the dry season, the fat sheep were better than could have been expected and competition was very keen. There was no entry of fine-woolled sheep, which was somwhat surprising for the Lake district. The'competitions brought out some very good rings, considerable interest being evinced in the pony classes. O’Connell’s Viking had to take second place to W. H. Jolly’s Sergeant Scoular in the high jump, for he baulked in his three attempts when the bar was raised to the sft lin level. The grain, roots and seeds formed a creditable display considering the very dry season. Partridge peas were especially good. Dairy produce and particularly the sundries section made an imposing display and drew forth considerable praise. Some very good samples of apples and pears were staged among the fruit classes. Bowls of asters and bunches of other flowers made a fine display in the floral classes. The organisation of the show left little to be desired, and the last of the competitions were got off up to time. Among visitors present at the show were Mr T. L. Macdonald, M.P., and Mr J, A. Roy, M.P. Both addressed showgoers over the loud speaker system and congratulated the officials and executive on the success achieved. Mr D. R. Rowe, president, also welcomed those present.
