LAKE COUNTY COUNCIL Monthly Meeting

There was a full attendance of councillors at the monthly meeting of the Lake County Council held last Thursday at Queenstown, Mr D. H. Cockburn presided. The department of Tourist and Publicity advised the council that £25 which was granted for repairs to the Greenstone Bridge some time ago, is still available, and a further £ls has been approved for the work. The engineer was given authority to start the work. Advice has been received from the District Highways Council confirming the appointment of Mr W. A. McLean to represent Lake County Council on the No. 16 District Highways Council. The Queensberry-Wanaka Main Highway will be classified as a State Highway as from April 1, 1948 according to advice received by the council from the No. 16 District Highways Council. Applications for Kinloch to Routeburn and Wanaka-Mt. Aspiring roads to be declared Main Highways did not receive favourable consideration. Dr W. A. Anderson, Medical Superintendent of the Lake County Hospital, Prankton, wrote requesting that the council take steps to improve the stretch of road from the State Highway to the Hospital. He referred to the bad corrugations and the dust menace. The requests were supplemented by a letter from the Southland Hospital Board. It was decided that the grader should cover the road regularly. The council were also prepared to investigate the possibility of sealing a short piece of the road next year. Mr J. H. Forbes, Glcnorehy advised the council of the flood danger to his property and of temporary steps he had taken to prevent it. The council decided to send a dozer to the area when available. The Upper AVakatipu Progress League advised the council of the dangerous state of Reese and Buckleburn bridges and stated that they were in urgent need of repair. Their letter also requested that the council despatch the heavy grader to Glenorchy to undertake work on the Glon-orchy-Paradise road which, they claim, is in bad condition. The council decided to advise the League of work that had been authorised in the area and in connection with some of the requests they had made. Messrs H. McKenzie and Sons, Walter Peak Station, requested the council to undertake road and bridge repairs at the head of Nicholas Plat. The engineer has the matter in hand. Mr I. L. Key drew the attention of the council to the overgrown state of the Closeburn-Glenorchy track and asked that work be undertaken on it. The engineer is to negotiate to have the work done. The inspector of Health advised in his report for the month ending February 29 that conditions generally throughout the county were satisfactory. The registration fee for dogs othc than working has been reduced to 3s fid. This is the same as for working dogs.
