DEPARTMENT CAN TAKE ACTION AGAINST PARENTS

SCHOOL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE DONE “ Present restrictions do not in any way alter the legal position regarding compulsory attendance of school,” stated a spokesman of the Education Department last week. “Although schools are closed, pupils are required to receive instruction by correspondence methods and are accordingly in the same position as pupils enrolled in the department’s Correspondence School,” he said. “There is no authority permitting children under 15 to take up employment in lieu of continuing to receive instruction by present methods, and any person who employs such children is liable to a fine up to five pounds.” This ruling allows proceedings to be taken against parents or guardians when children fail to send in a reasonable amount of work.
