THE WIZARD
Soto® tim® after winning the Cromwell D®rby in .the 1880’s, Th® Wizard developed a trotting gait. The Wizard then broke a fetlock and was placed in a •ling for thr«® weeks in a Cromwell •tabl®. He was then turned out for six months’ sp®ll, and was not expected to race again. However, it was then that h® showed the qualities of a trotter, and so the conversion came about. In winning a two-mile event, The Wizard put up a then New Zealand record of 6min 35sec. Later he finished second to a mare called Ellen, which after an inquiry was held, to be a “ ring in” and was disqualified,,the race going to The Wizard. That was a three-mile •▼®nt, at which time the record was train. The Wizard broke the record by 18 seconds, going 7min 42sec. Th® Wizard had numerous successes mnder the expert piloting of his owner, Mr Q. Rivers, long residing .at Alexandra. His end came suddenly when, after passing the judge in fifth or sixth position in a rac® at Addingtpn,, he dropped dead. .
