MRS G. CHALMERS WINS GARDEN COMPETITION

Queenstown Beautifying Society The judging of local gardens eligible for competition in the Queenstown Beautifying Society’s project was finalised during the week. Mr Borrie of Mosgiel a gardener of many year’s experience carried out the final judgment, being accompanied by Mr L. C. N. Wilder, stock inspector, also a gardening enthusiast, who made the first inspection. Gardens most worthy of consideration in the town were narrowed down to about a dozen. In every case a genuine attempt was made to preserve some sort of order in the garden together with a pleasing blending of annuals, perennials and shrubs. Gardens in the rear of properties were, in the, majority of eases clean and tidy. Recent development of some cottage gardens was quite apparent and there appeared an incentive to cultivate the art. The judge placed emphasis on display and the proper mixture of various classes of flowers. He was ‘impressed with the layout of lawns and shrubs which characterise the more attractive layouts. Points were given for cultivation, quality, artistic display and succession. Not a great deal of attention had been given to frontage of properties, i.e., the footpaths. There were one or two outstanding examples of what can be done to improve the footpaths and precincts of properties and attention in this aspect should be stressed. It is hoped that the borough council will co-operate, for well-kept footpaths redound to the credit of the town. Mrs G. Chalmers was awarded the first prize in the competition with a total of 164 points and is to be congratulated on her win. Others close up were John Gilmore 161, J. Chilwell 160, N. Armour 159 i, J. Downey 156, Geo. Thomas 152, G. Forbes and J. Keen 150 points each. The school gardens have been judged by Mr Wilder and some suitable prize will be donated by the committee.
