Sir Leonard Isitt

Visit to Cromwell In the course of a tour of inspection of aerodrome sites, Sir Leonard Isitt arrived in Cromwell on Tuesday morning 27th inst., for the purpose of inspecting local aerodrome sites. Sir Leonard was met on arrival by the Mayor (Mr Partridge), the president and secretary of the Cromwell Aero Club (Messrs J. R. Munro and J. Bilton), and several citizens and an inspection was then made of local sites. On the party’s return to Cromwell Sir Leonard was tendered a public welcome in the Council Chambers. On behalf of the citizens the Mayor extended a welcome to Sir Leonard and tr(uslj(ed that lie was favourably impressed with the sites he had been shown. The Mayor pointed out the necessity for a feeder air service and also referred to the air taxi service which was established at Queenstown. Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P., expressed his pleasure in welcoming Sir Leonard to the district and said that by the extension of air service the district’s prosperity would increase with the added tourist traffic brought about by the swifter means of travel. The president of the Cromwell Aero Club, Mr J. R. Munro, pointed out the early history of the airfield at Cromwell which had been in use for the past 27 years, and during this period several distinguished airmen had found the ground to be quite satisfactory. Sir Leonard Isitt, replying thanked the various speakers for their welcome and stated that his visit was to obtain first-hand knowledge of the district, and his job was to provide air services and although feeder services would be expensive at first as far as freight and : passenger carrying was concerned, but when the traffic increased and more machines were available, the service , would justify itself. |
