ARROWTOWN BOROUGH COUNCIL
At a special meeting of the council the statutory half-holiday was fixed for Saturday. In attendance at the first meeting for the year were the Mayor (Mr E. L. Thompson), Crs J. W. Reed, L. Stapp, J. W. Henderson, E. J. Cowie, W. J. Shaw, and E. C. Paterson. An apology for absence was received from Cr E. J. Saunders. A reply to the borough telegram to Mr T. McDonald, M.P., entreating his support to a State highway through Arrowtown was received, stating that the Main Highways Board Avere unable to accede to the request. Letters from the Wakatipu branch of Federated Farmers, the Mount Cook Tourist Company, and the Queenstown Borough Council petitions in respect to the State highways were received, and members were also appointed to a deputation to meet the Minister to discuss the question at his next visit to the disrict. * Mr W. H. Haim and Mr C. Kitto applied to the council to rent or purchase Mr Thomas’s and Mrs Hartley’s residences respectively.—The council decided that it was unable to take action in the matter Avhilst there Avere unoccupied dwellings Avithin the borough.— Messrs Thomas and Hartley wrote protesting that any action should bo taken, as holiday residences Avere not cornered by the Act, and that the residences _ under question Avere occupied.—The council decided to obtain legal advice on this matter. It Avas decided that the Mayor and the chairman of the Progressive League should meet the Minister of Health, Miss Howard, and entertain her. Mr James ShaAV, member of the PoAver Board, reported that he had put the council’s request regarding wiring the recreation ground before his board, and that Mr Kemp Avould inspect in February. Mr Galt, of the Power Board, Avrote stating that the board Avas unable to do the work before the holidays. Mr W. H. Nairn’s application to purchase a quarter-acre section under lease to him Avas declined. An application from Mrs E. Thompson to erect a sign was'granted. Messrs W. G. and J. Tate, trustees of the Oddfellows’ Hall, Avrote stating their agreement to the transfer of the Kail to the council. A letter from the Public Trustee regarding the disposal of the late Mr J. W. Jenkin’s property Avas received. The inspector of health submitted his two-monthly report. A letter of thanks for a medal and certificate of service Avas received from Mr Cliff Sims, of Hastings. A copy of the Local Government Commission’s report on the catchment board was received. A grant of a further £l2O for gravelling from the Public Works Department to complete the gravelling of the main highways was received. It Avafe decided that 240 yards of gravel be spread on the main higlnvay from Doctor’s road to the slaughter yards. The council cast its vote for one member to the Land Board. It Avas resolved that the dayman Avater the main street in preparation for oiling. Plans and authority for the public conveniences were received from the Building Controller. Permission to add penalty on rates unpaid by February 24 and to hand outstanding rates to a solicitor for collection Avas granted. Cr R. J. Cowie, chairman of the Works Committee, presented his report, which Avas adopted. Cr Henderson, chairman of the Hall Committee, reported that the windoAvs of the hall had been frosted. The question of wandering stock Avas discussed, arising from complaints about this nuisance. The minutes of the council state that owners of wandering stock will be summoned after one warning has been given. Accounts amounting to £414 13s fid Avere passed for payment.
