Holiday Occupations First Mate on Motor Launch Trips on Wakatipu

Most boys would give anything to be first mate on a fast passenger launch making 'daily trips on Lake Wakatipu. And what boy would not be thrilled by having complete control of the craft and opening the throttle wide out? Roy Lewis, 15 years of age, pupil of the Queenstown High School, has this holiday job on Mr Jack Stones “ Meteor,” a launch well-known for its speed and snappy appearance. The «Meteor ” makes half-hour trips to Kelvin Grove and Roy is often given complete control of the 95 h.p. engine while Mr Stone attends to mooring ropes and other duties. This is Roy’s first year with the u Meteor,” but he is by no means a new hand at the job for he has spent previous school holidays on the launch “ Muratai.” When interviewed by the Mail, he said that he hoped to join an officers’ training school of the British Merchant Navy when he turned 16. He realises the study required to graduate from such schools and said that he was spending most of his time at high school on subjects that would help him in his career.
