Monthly Council Meeting The Minister of Works, Wellington, advised that the subsidy for the Gibbston back road had been increased to £2 for fil. The council appointed Cr W. A, McLean as its representative on the Highways Council. The Local Government Commission sent a opy of the final scheme for the creation of the Otago Catchment District. CORRESPONDENTS’ REQUESTS A. T. Burnett, Half-way Bay, reminded the counicl of its assurance 12 months ago to re-erect the Longburn bridge. Attention for in view of shearing in January. —It was decided he be advised that the bridge would be erected at the earliest convenient date. Geo. Shaw, Elfin Bay, complained of nothing having been done to the Greenstone track for some considerable time.—He will be informed that the council proposes to ask the Tourist Department to have the track opened and give attention to bridge. Wright Stephenson and Co. asked if arrangements could be made for Mr Galvin, Cardrona, to secure the plantation reserve of 100 acres, or portion of it, situated alongside the Cardrona road and adjoining run No. 334. —The reeuest was declined. In consequence of a complaint made by a Glenorchy resident, re wandering cattle, it was decided to appoint Jas. Robinson as ranger, at £5 per annum. W. Elliott, Wanaka, asked for permission to remove more soil and turf from the side of the road. The same writer asked to be allowed to make a quantity of sun-dried bricks on the roadside, either at the back of the golf links or on the Cardrona Creek side of Wanaka orchard. —The engineer was instructed to discuss the matter with the writer on his next visit to Wanaka. Nine ratepayers of Wanaka petitioned the council to have Lismore street formed and graded, thus providing a fire break between the plantation of pinus insignus trees on one side and the household properties on the other. —Steps would be taken to make a fire break, decided the council. The monthly health and traffic inspectors’ reports were received and adopted. D. Scott, Rees Valley, Glenorchy, wrote stating that the majoriy of the local farmers favoured paying ’ out for certain birds’ eggs (thrush, sparrow and yellow hammer, in the main). The Wakatipu branch of-'tlrc Federated Farmers’ Union strongly favoured the reinstatement of the payment of a bounty on birds’ eggs and heads, starlings to be excluded.—lt was decided to await other reports. Tn response to a request from the Upper Wakatipu Progressive League it was decided to write the Minister of Works and ascertain' if he proposed to visit Glenorchy and to ask the league to prepare a list of matters to be brought before him. A request of T. B. Scott to open the road to Doulan’s Creek, Gibbston, was ’eft in abeyance pending some p ogr ss in a coal-mining venture. REPORT FROM CHAIRMAN The chairman ihade a short report on business transacted at the South Island Counties conference at Invercargill. He spoke hopefully of an air feeder service for Queenstown. A remit to ask the Government to advance afforestation was carried. The GlenorchyQueenstown road project was still on a very low priority, it was stated. In . response to a request of Gr Aubrey, the council instructed the engineer to have urgent repairs made to the Mt. Aspiring road, Wanaka. 1 Discussion took place in regard to the necessity for new plant, i It was decided to get quotations for the purchase of a_ grader and truck. The State Hydro-electric Department wrote advising that Mr L. I. Smith, Glenorchy, had applied for an electric lines license, but before granting same the department would give the council an opportunity of perusing same and of incorporating its requirements in regard to the electric lines and street lights in the township. As nothing had been done during the last 12 months in respect of the reticulation of rural areas covering the Queenstown-Arrow Riding and the Kingston-Garston district, it was decided to make further representations to the power supply authorities. A letter Was received from H. Davies asking that the Branches road be widened by 25 to 30ft at the Sandhills in order to enable mining plant to be brought out. The engineer was asked to make an early inspection of the road. At the conclusion of the meeting the chairman extended Christmas and New Year greetings to councillors.
