Swimming Baths To be Re-opened For Adults
Although the Cromwell swimming baths were closed and drained recently as a precaution against school children bathing there, the borough council at its meeting last Thursday night agreed to fill and re-open them for the use of persons over 10 years of age. Explaining the reason for closing the baths, Or Jolly stated that on the day the schools closed, because of the infantile paralysis epidemic, he found the baths full of school children. The Health Department had issued a statement stating that our children should not congregate in great numbers at places such as swimming baths. He therefore had the baths cleared of the children and drained. Councillor S, Brown pointed out that the swimming club itself was in danger of closing because of the lack of interest and he suggested that the baths be refilled and opened to persons over 10 years of age. The council agreed unanimously that this should be done. The Mayor, Mr Partridge, also stated that the swimming club would have the council’s full support. It was also decided that the baths caretaker be informed that the front gate which had not been opened for public use this season, was in future to be used at all times. The side gate which had been built was not intended for this purpose.
