PISA WATER RACE
TROUBLE EXPERIENCED BOROUGH COUNCIL DISCUSSION Trouble had been experienced during the past month on the Mt. Pisa race as a result of slips, stated Councillor Laurie, chairman of the Water Committee, at the monthly meeting of the Cromwell Borough Council last Thursday night. Moreover, he stated, the present race caretaker, Mr P. A. Heaney, jun., desired to terminate his position, and he considered Mr Heaney’s resignation was due to the action of the Ripponvale settlers recently. When the settlers found the race was not carrying water, said Cr Laurie, they found the syphon blocked by rubbish. They then rang the chairman of the Water Committee and lodged a complaint. Councillor Laurie pointed out that the correct procedure in such a case would have been to contact Mr Heaney or to have notified the council. The matter would then have been dealt with immediately) At the time of the incident Mr Heaney was busy harvesting so could not pay as much attention to the race as in normal times. He was not aware of any disorder and Cr Laurie notified him. An immediate inspection was then made and repairs were effected. The council agreed that every effort should be made to retain Mr Heaney’s services. An application by H. E. Thomas and Co. for the installation of a half-inch water tapping at their freezer was left to the Water Committee. The mayor, Mr W. Partridge, stated that as the company was using more water than the usual household supply it should be charged an extraordinary water rate. Councillor Laurie pointed out that- if the company found the charge exorbitant it was likely that a factory which it Avas proposed to build at Cromwell would be built at Alexandra. This factory, he had been informed, would employ labour from the district.
