New Council Discusses Work In Prospect
■Work ahead of the newly-elected Borough Council was reviewed by the Mayor, Dr W. A. Anderson, at the new council’s first meeting last Tuesday. There were present—the Mayor, and Crs D. W. Thompson, F. J. Gavin, J. L. Lindsay, C. A. Inglis, W. H. Nelson and R. C. Robins. The Mayor congratulated the new council on attaining office, especially welcoming Crs Robins, Nelson and Inglis, who were taking office for the first time, and Cr Gavin, who hadserved in previous councils. He thanked the retiring councillors, Messrs A) H. Wheatley, H. Sew Hoy and J. B. Hamilton, for their past service. The Mayor envisaged certain works ahead, such as continuance of improvements to the new sports ground, the erection of a pavilion there, additions to the camping ground, and lessening of the dust nuisance in the town. He regretted having to tell the new council that the financial position was not good. The council, he said, was overdrawn some £2OOO. However, a good portion of the rates had to be ■ collected, and considerable revenue from the camping ground in the coming season was anticipated. I’he Mayor appointed Cr Thompson as Deputy Mayor. The following committees were appointed: — Finance. —The Mayor, Crs Thompson and Inglis. Works. —Crs Thompson (chairman), J. L. Lindsay and W. H. Nelson. Camping Grounds. —Crs Thompson (chaiiman), Gavin and Robins. : Library.—Crs Inglis (chairman), Robins and Nelson. Garrison Hall. —Crs J, L. Lindsay (chairman),» Gavin and Nelson. Fire Brigade. —Crs Nelson (chairman) and J. L. Lindsay. Band. —Crs Robins (chairman) and Gavin. The Mayor is an ex officio member of all committees. It was decided to appoint Mr D. Galbraith as building inspector at a (emuueiation of 30 per cent, of the fees, and that an advisory, committee consisting_pf Crs Lindsay, Nelson and Ga.in be associated with him. The Mayor’s honorarium was fixed at £3O per annum. Correspondence The inspector of health reported that the town appeared to be in a satis- - factory state. — In response to an offer of J. Edgar to purchase fallen trees on the commonage, it was decided to reserve the trees for milling purposes. Mr T. L. Macdonald, M.P., wrote giving the contents of a letter which he had received from Mr Semple, 'Minister of Works, in reply to his advocacy of the declaration as a main highway the road or street leading to the camping ground, also in reference to the Queenstown-Glenorchy road project. Mr Macdonald is to be thanked and asked to persevere with his requests. The local conservator of fish and game was granted permission to erect pens in the camping ground for young duck and chukor. Requests from the proprietor of the Mountaineer Hotel and from Mrs M. Reidy for oil to be sprayed on Shotover , and Church streets respectively to abate the dust nuisance were granted subject to their being sufficient oil. The secretary of the Amateur Athletic Association (Queenstown branch) asked for permission to use the new Recreation Ground for sports on December 27 and for temporary conveniences. Use of the ground was granted free of charge, the association to provide conveniences. It was also decided to close certain roads leading to the ground. The Dunedin Motor Cycling Club was granted the use of the ground on January 2 for a fee of £5, J. H. Stone was granted permission to use the town wharf as a landing place for his launch, the Works Committtco to approve of the necessary opening on the wharf. The lessee of the Embassy Theatre was granted permission to screen a picture on Christmas night. The tender of J. B, Hamilton, jun,, to cut grass on streets was accepted. The Works Committee recommended that during the coming month the swimming platform and diving board be erected and the old town jetty be repaired. Oiling of roads, cutting grass on streets and reserves, and attention to traffic signs were also recommended. The Camping Ground Committee recommended that all private owners : of huts be requested to remove railings and fences adjacent to their huts,
day. The Library report was adopted. Accounts amounting to £835 3s 3d were passed for payment. It was decided to warn people not to deposit rubbish on the streets. The usual clean-up day was left in the hands of the Works Committee. It was decided to approach the Tourist Department again for assistance towards repairing the Queenstown hill
