From the Files of the Lake Wakatip Mail At the Queenstown School examination of the children on the 20th December, the names of those who distinguished themselves were John Roche, James Boyne, James Pickett, William Boyne, and Robert Stcnliouse. $ # * On Christmas Eve the shops and streets of Queenstown presented a very showy appearance. Most of the hotels were decorated with evergreens and garlands, and a flag or two displayed from other business places added to the pleasing effect. * * * January, 1867: The “ Tuapoka Recorder ” speaks of the evils of. the influx of the Mongolian race. “ Chinamen arc arriving in large groups in the province. We object to Chinese. All the good they do is counterbalanced by the well-known evils attaching to their presence in the community. They are notorious thieves of fowls, especially. In spurious gold deceptions their fame is equally widespread, and in debauching young girls they are perfect adepts. * * * The Borough Council was informed by the Provincial Chambers, Dunedin, that telegraph communication with Queenstown is provided for in the Supplementary Estimates; also £.4000 has been voted for the completion of the main road to Queenstown, and £SOO for the necessary ferry approaches. * * * Half-crowns are no longer coined at the mint, says a recent parliamentary paper. Florins have taken their place. In like manner the threepenny piece is superseding the silver groat.; no such coin as the latter has been sent out since March, 1865. * * * A successful two days’ ' racing was ' held at Frankton. Here arc some of ‘ the principal events: —Maiden Plate — ' Mr Eichardt’s “Dolo” 1, Mr Pinkerton’s “ Kettledrum ” 2. District Plate • —Mr Cox’s “ Harkaway ” 1, Mr Scole’s “Scrubber” 2. Wakatip Handicap— Mr Eichardt’s “ Dolo ” 1, Mr Seole’s “Scrubber” 2. Hack Race —Mr Monaghan’s “ Colonel ” 1, Mr Hedge’s “ Strongbow ” 2. Lake District Handicap—Mr Cox’s “ Harkaway ” 1, Mr Scole’s “ Scrubber ” 2. Steeplechase — Mr C. C. Boyes’ “ Buccaneer ” 1, Mr Cox’s “Scotch Jock” 2. * * * In a comment it was stated, “ an unusual number of ladies kindly put in an appearance.” The return from the races was by a ride along the shores * or a sail upon the waters of the lake. # * * At a meeting of the Church of England, it was stated the church was out of debt, and now that a new bishop is on his way to Otago, it is hoped to get a recognised Minister. A good minister would soon secure a congregation, and though his efforts might be almost missionary at first, they would ultimately be attended with success. The members of the Church are numerous and wealthy, but strongly apathetic. '
