Pioneer Link Severed By Death of Mr Hugh McKenzie

The death at Invercargill on Monday, November 3, of Mr Hugh McKenzie severs another link in the McKenzie family, whose forebears, the late Mr and Mrs Dan McKenzie, were pioneer settlers of Martin’s Bay. Mr McKenzie was born at Martin’s Bay in September, 1878, the year of the big flood. According to his sister’s book, “ Pioneers of Martin’s Bay,” the two-hour infant son, Hugh, lay on his mother’s bed in the McKenzie home, which was surrounded by water to a depth of a foot or so. For the greater part of his life Hugh McKenzie was a partner with his brothers in the raising of cattle at Martin’s Bay. He left this part of the coast for Milford Sound in 1925, where he sojourned for some years and subsequently came inland to Kinloch. Whilst in the latter region lie was employed on the tracks in the GrecnstoneKinloch area until illhealth overtook him. A most conscientious man, the late Mr McKenzie could always be relied on to do honest toil and his generous nature led him to perform many acts of kindness during his life. Mr McKenzie is survived by his sister, Mrs P. Mackenzie, Queenstown, and two brothers, Mr D. McKenzie, Dunedin, formerly of (llenorchy, and Mr Malcolm McKenzie. The funeral took place last Wednesday. A Requiem Mass was celebrated in Ht. Joseph’s Church in the morning and he was buried in the Queenstown cemetery. The Rev. Father Hanrahan performed the rites.
