QUEENSTOWN ROTARY CLUB
A very informative talk on the meat industry in the Dominion was given by Mr D. H. Cockburn at the weekly meeting of the Queenstown Rotary Club. Tracing the history of the meat export trade from 1882, Mr Cockburn spoke of the advent of frozen meat, trading by private enterprise, and eventually Government control of the industry in 1922. He briefly touched upon the organisation of the Meat Board, which consisted of 25 members, of which he was one. He also spoke of the advertising of New Zealand meat in the butchers’ shops in England and the Continent. The value of the meat and by-products sent to Great Britain was 00,000 per year, he said, and would soon reach the £40,000,000 level. This was onethird of the production of meat in New Zealand. Mr Cockburn also referred to the stabilisation of meat prices. He was thanked for his interesting address. Governor Charles Greenslade asked the club to continue its meetings throughout the holiday season, as many rotarians would be visiting Queenstown. Mr A. Muirhcad was formally received into Rotary. A visitor present was A. Prior.
