From the Files of the Lake Wakatip Mail October, 1866 At a public meeting .in Powell’s Family Hotel, it was resolved to form ji new jockey club under the name of “The Lake District Jockey Club.” The subscription was fixed at £3 3s annually. A committee of 11 was ap-pointed-eight from Queenstown and two from Arrow. It Avas decided to hold the races on January 11 and 12. Mr W. G. Rees Avas appointed president. + + + + November, 1866 The Catholics of the district Avill be glad to learn that the Rev. H. Biljiard has arrived and will celebrate Mass in the Chapel, QueenstoAcn. -f- + + + Mr Murray, the contractor for the suspension bridge across the Shotover at Skipper’s Point, has arrived, and is making arrangements for the immediate commencement of the Avork. The contract price is £1375. The length of the bridge Avill be 700 feet, and it Avill be 20 feet above the river, + + + + An advertisement in another column notifies that the Prince of Wales Hotel, true to its colours—or rather feathers —will offer, on His Royal Highness’ birthday, a retreat to all comers, and specially to those returning from the ploughing match.
