INDIA TO-DAY

Missionary Illustrates Life with Lantern Slides A moderate attendance of townspeople at the Parish Hall on Thursday last thoroughly enjoyed a lantern lecture by Dr A. L. Sutherland, a medical missionary of the Presbyterian Church, who is home on furlough from India. During an hour’s lecture, illustrated by lantern slides, Dr Sutherland gave an illuminating picture of India in the present day and endeavoured to visualise what will come out of the new era which the country is entering upon. With the emergence of a free and independent India the whole attitude of approach of the church will have to be considered. Dr Sutherland said it was difficult to realise the abject poverty in which the majority of Indians live. No mission work could truly call itself Christian if it did not have within its scope the caring for the sick and the diseased. Many of the slides depicted the activities in the well-ordered hospitals. The staffs of the institutions, equipment, instruments, etc., must be of the best. / Other pictures illustrated technical and other professional institutions, schools and colleges, social and rural reconstruction, which would be greatly benefited by missionary guidance. India’s population was 40 millions and another five millions was added every year. \ Mr Sutherland was heartily thanked for his lecture.
