PROGRESS LEAGUE

Borough Council Approves Foreshore Improvements

At the monthly meeting of the Progress League a letter was received from the Queenstown Borough Council conveying the council’s approval to the League’s proposals for the improvement of the foreshore surrounding the bay area. Members expressed their appreciation of the council’s co-operation in the scheme and it was decided to forward the scheme plans to the resident engineer of the Public Works, Alexandra, with a view to the departmental report and estimate of cost being forwarded to the Minister of Internal Affairs. The chairman, Mr James McDonald, stated that he had interviewed the Minister during a recent visit when the details of the proposals were discussed. The postmaster, in reply to the League’s request, wrote stating that the box lobby lighting would be maintained until midnight, from Monday to Saturday, and until 8 p.m. on Sundays. The postmaster to be thanked for his attention to the matter. Captain G. A. Herbert, president of the Wakatipu Ski Club, announced that advice had been received to the effect that the New Zealand Championships would be held on the Coronet Peak Ski-ing field from the 14th to the 31st August, 1948. In making this announcement Captain Herbert stated that the local ski club desired the fullest support of the League in the matter' of arrangements for accommodation. It was mentioned that the new Ski Tow equipment had enticed many skiers from distant centres during the past season when up to 500 skiers were on the grounds at one time, also, that approximately 5000 ski enthusiasts had visited the Coronet Peak ground during the season. In view of the championship meeting next year, it was decided that two delegates from the League join a subcommittee from the Ski Club to interview local accommodation house proprietors for the purpose of ensuring accommodation facilities on a much larger scale than hitherto. Advice was received from, the officer-in-charge of the local Railways Department to the effect that greater facilities in the form of a waiting room would be provided as soon as the proposed alterations and extensions to the present Railway Station were proceeded with. The president reported that further steps had been taken with respect to establishing a bus shelter at the corner of Stanley street and Frankton road. In order to finalise matters it was resolved to arrange for a deputation to meet the manager of Road Services at Queenstown on October 20 next. Mr G. Lynch asked that steps be taken to induce the Railways Department to allow the freight truck to deliver goods direct to local storekeepers rather than follow the present method of delivery to the goods shed and redelivery by local carriers. The matter was referred to the deputation appointed to confer with the. Road Services, manager.
