Arrowtown Council Accepts Apology for Term "Ghost Town "
An apology for any slight inferred in the use of the term “ Ghost Town ” in reference to ArroAvtown, was received from the managing editor of “ The Motor World,” the Shell Company and Ilott’s Ltd., by the Aitoav Borough Council at its monthly meeting on Tuesday last Aveck. The term Avas used in a recent article in The Motor World. The council accepted the apology. Present at the meeting Avere the Mayor, Mr E. L. Thompson, Crs E. J. Cowie, J. W. Henderson, J. W. Eeid, E. J. Saunders, W. J. Shaw and A. C. Erridge. The minutes of the August meeting and the Works Committee meeting held on September 18 were confirmed. Mr J. H. Crane applied to lease sections 9, 10, and 11, portion of section 1 and 2, block 3, borough of ArrowtoAvn, offering £2 per annum. —The application Avas granted subject to fencing arrangements being made Avith other lessors and subject to the council being immune from any expense incurred in this direction. A letter from the secretary of the Otago Central PoAver Board, in reference to the matter of the fees of returning officers was received. The Inspector of Health’s tAvomonthly report shoAving a total of 12 inspections Avas received. Lengthy correspondence from the Department of Industries and Commerce and the Southland Hospital Board’s report and balance sheet Avere tabled. The chairman of the Works Committee’s report Avas adopted, and his action in regard to the purchase of a tAvohorse grader Avas endorsed. It Avas decided to repair the stone Avail on the road to the beach and to remove the rubbish at the cemetery gates. At the request of the Arrow Entertainers it Avas decided to paint the outside of the Avindow in the women’s dressing room. The town clerk’s application for leave of absence from October 10 to 15 Avas granted. Accounts amounting to £24 2s 8d were passed for payment. DOMAIN BOARD A meeting of the Domain Board Avas held after the council meeting. The secretary reported receipt of a
grant of £SO from the Lands Department. j It was decided to order concrete posts for the domain fences. The Lands Department submitted plans of the domain, setting out the camping area in the plan. It Avas decided that the board should hold an inspection of the area at an early date.
