Pin-up Girls Now Featured in Wallpaper Designs
The pin-up girl became established as an American institution. Ranging from glossy photographs to ragged newspaper and magazine cut-outs, these pictures were to be seen wherever the American armed forces went throughout the world. Now the pin-up girl, lookingfor new worlds to conquer, has extended her charms to the domestic scene. She has been embodied in a fundamental of interior decorating and design—wallpaper. Correctly estimating the appeal that such a novel idea would have, a wallpaper manufacturing firm deciding to immortalise the pin-up girl by manufacturing - a paper which would feature her in various characteristic poses. Now they find their creation has become one of the most popular of all their many types of wallpaper. Decorously Garbed The. paper is manufactured in two colours, blue and beige. The pin-up girl herself, rather decorously garbed in either a sun-suit or bathing suit, is shown in four typical poses. In one she is riding a hobby-horse, in another she is wading in the surf at the beach; a third shows her kneeling in the garden, resting after a bit of hard work; and the fourth is the most typical of all pin-up poses: stretched out langourously on a chase lounge, talking into a telephone. To achieve the effect of these pictures being pinned up on a Avail, the hand-printed sketches are drawn in individual squares and seemingly superimposed on a striped background. Popular Innovation The wallpaper has proved popular — and not just for bachelors’ apartments, either. Restaurants, cocktail bars, hotel lounge rooms and such are finding it an ideal-way to lighten their atmosphere. Many single men find it well suited to either living-room, bedroom, or bath- 4 room. Mothers are re-doing their sons’ rooms with it. Not long ago some girls at a college in Massachusetts papered an entire suite of rooms with it.. And naturally there has been a rushing business with fraternity houses at numerous colleges all over the country. Some time ago, a salesman sold a / quantity of wallpaper to ah elderly < . woman who said she was buying it for her son. Asked how old the boy Avas, the woman said he Avas close to 05. This would seem to bear out the contention of the manufacturers that at longlast their industry has turned out wallcovering of Avhich men —of all ages—- • will never grow tired.
