STORMY WEATHER

Steamer Service Delayed

The town and district was visited by severe gales, during the past week. On her return journey from Kingston on Tuesday, the Ben Lomond steamer had to shelter in Half-way Bay overnight and did not reach Queenstown until Wednesday afternoon. On Wednesday morning a high wind of gale force swept the town and levelled fences and sheds and brought down trees. An old shed situated in the police grounds and said to be used as the stables for the constabulary in the early days, was completely demolished. It is not likely to be erected again but its chief value is in a considerable quantity of galvanised roofing iron which is a scarce commodity nowadays. Only minor damage is reported in the country, consisting mainly of fallen trees. The high winds proved a danger where burning--off operations were being carried out.
