PROPOSED Community Centre Recommended

Public Meeting To be Held

A building which will provide for a social hall and other amenities and will serve as a community centre has been proposed as the war memorial for Queenstown. A public meeting is to be called for October 1 for consideration of the proposals and the plans of the building are to be displayed in a shop window in the town. Tentative plans prepared by an Invercargill architect were considered by the Memorial Committee at a meeting held in the Queenstown library on Thursday. Arrangements to forward the project were also discussed. The Mayor, Dr Anderson, presided and also present were Captain G. Herbert, Messrs M. T. Robertson, G. Lynch and W. Smith (secretary). Government Subsidy Dr Anderson said it was proposed to make a community centre of the memorial and thus conform to the conditions which would qualify for the Government subsidy of £ for £ towards the cost. The location of the memorial would be in a commanding position on the new recreation ground. It would provide for a social hall, 30 feet by 20 feet, separate dressing rooms for men and women, hot and cold showers and conveniences. In addition, there would be an office and a kitchen with a servery. It was not known what the cost would be, continued Dr Anderson. Close on £ 1000 was in sight including £7OO from carnival funds, permission to spend which would be obtained from the trustees. R.S.A. Contribution Mr G. Lynch, secretary of the R.S.A., said that the branch had £4O in hand for the project. Dr Anderson also stated that there would probably be a balance from soldiers’ functions held during the war. It was formally resolved that a public meeting be held on Wednesday, October 1, and the plans be exhibited in the windows of the Lakeside Butchery.
