LAKE COUNTY MAIL
WAR MEMORIAL PROJECT
No. 18. Wednesday, September 24, 1947.
The World War II Memorial project for Queenstown which has been under consideration by a local committee for some time past, has now reached the stage when the public will be called upon to consider the recommendations that will be submitted. For this purpose a public meeting is called for Wednesday next, October 1 to hear the report of the committee. The outcome of their deliberations will be seen in the plans prepared by a competent architect and will be fully explained by the Mayor. The object aimed at is essentially in the nature of a community centre to be located on the new recreation grounds. The committee is to be commended on this choice for it will come within the category of memorials which will qualify for a Government subsidy. Never in the history of Quenstown has such a golden opportunity arrived. It is something worthwhile for which residents can work. It is gratifying also that a substantial nucleus of a fund can be made available for the project and this should prove an incentive for a vigorous campaign. It is the duty of every organisation and every citizen to get behind the memorial movement for its purpose is firstly, to commemorate the sacrifices of those men who fell in the last war and, secondly, and most important, the provision of utilities which will be for the benefit of our youth in years to come.
