PROPOSED WORK.

In his programme of work for the month, the engineer made the following proposals: Grade main highways and Crown Terrace roads and commence clearing water tables and culverts on Crown Tange. Complete surfacing the Queenstown- Arthur’s Point section of the Queenstown-Wanaka main highway. Fill in pot holes on Dan O’Connell-Saddle section of Skippers Highway. Repairs on Closeburn and Moke Lake roads. In the Greenstone riding general maintenance is proposed on Glenorchy-Paradisc main highway and gravelling of a short section between Oxburn and Rees bridge; also fill in road between Paradise House and Reid’s yards. It was proposed to grade the main highway in Wanaka riding and give attention to. watertables, culverts and potholes on Queenstown: Wanaka main highway between Cardrona and Crown. Range; to inmprove two corners on the WanakaGlendhu, road at Wanaka Station, and install a 48in diameter pipe culvert at Timber Gully between Wanaka and Cardrona. Cr Thompson asked for some attention to Tobin’s track and the. engineer and Cr Rowe were asked to report to next meeting. Further recommendations for improvements were made as follows: Mill road to be graded towards Thurlby Domain; attention to Emmerson’s road, Cardrona River and fords to Scurr’s; gravelling on McNamee’s back road and removal of willows in creek at Nokomai siding. •Cr Bryant asked that the track to Caple’s old homestead in the vicinity of the upper crossing of the Greenstone be repaired. —The request was noted. Other matters referred to by Cr Bryant were to be considered later.

The latter’s tender was accepted. Mr Hailcnstein offered the use of the building known as the Provincial Hotel at 5s per week for the use of the council. The offer was accepted for one month. The council met weekly. August, 1866 At a public meeting it was decided that the property of the tire brigade be handed over to the council. The council agreed to build an engine house near the site of Mr Bridge’s old shop at a cost of not more than £25. M. J. Malaghan was made first captain at a public meeting. September, 1866 Mr H. Manders was gazetted manager of the Queenstown Cemetery. Ground can now be set apart to those religious bodies who prefer their own separate interment areas. Arrangements have been made to prevent cattle and swine from trespassing over the graves of the dead. A ploughing match was held at Mr Seoles’s farm near Hayes Lake in aid of hospital funds. The following were the winners:—John Barton 1, John Cameron 2, John Plaisted 3, James Charman 4. Mr Braiden Frankton obtained first prize for the best pair of horses. The Wakatipu District Hospital Committee accepted the following tenders for food: —Four pound loaf, Is 2d; meat, 7d lb; milk, Is quart; fresh butter, 3s lb; eggs, 3s dozen; firewood, £2 cord. The condition of the Arthur’s Point bridge is said to be very dangerous. So fully aware of this are the packers, that they allow the horses and goods to pass over before they risk their lives upon it. The Peninsula and Staircase runs on Lake Wakatipu, Nos. 331 and 345, were sold by Messrs Grant and Maitland to Messrs Boycs Brothers for £15,500. The runs comprised 75,000 acres with 7150 sheep and a few cattle and horses.
