McConochie and Powell, proprietors Lake View Nursery Gardens (present camping ground), advertised that they have added to the gardens shower baths. A bathroom is replete with every convenience. The first election for councillors for the borough took place on August 1, 1866. The polling was as follows; — North Ward: D. Weaver, 13; M. J. Malaghan, 13; E. Burns, 10; M. Fraer, 4 . The first two were elected. In South Ward election the voting was as follows: B. Hallenstein, 20; D. Powell, 16; J. Turner, 16. The returning officer was unable to make a declaration in this election until next morning when a further election was held, when Powell was defeated by three votes. The first meeting of the Queenstown Municipal Council was held on August 15, 1866. A motion that Mr Manders ' be appointed town clerk at £SO per annum was not seconded. It was decided to call for applications for the position. Mr H. Manders was subsequently elected at £IOO per annum and to give legal advice free. Mr Wright was appointed surveyor for the town. A notice of motion concerning the desirability of securing the peninsula as a reserve for public purposes was tabled. At a subsequent meeting of the council the following tenders were received for cleaning streets, vacant allotments, etc.:—J. McDougall £75, H. Prince £65, S. G. Cook £3O.
