TREE-PLANTING CEREMONY

Work of Mrs R. M. Douglas

At the request of the teachers and committee of the Arrowtovvn School, Mjrs E. M. Douglas, former head teacher, planted a kawa-kino tree in the school gardens at a function held on Wednesday of last week. Mrs Douglas was head teacher of the school for 25 years before she retired some two and a-half years ago. The tree is to be a living appreciation of the work she has done in making the school garden a beauty spot which is known throughout Otago and Southland. The head teacher, Mr C. E. Walker, explained to the children the significance of the function, and said the tree would be a living tribute to the hard work accomplished by Mrs Douglas. Replying, Mrs Douglas stated it was an honour to plant the tree. She would always cherish the days which she spent in the garden and would watch with interest the growth of this tree. Also present at the function were Miss Terry, assistant mistress, and Mrs I. B. Eitchie, secretary of the School Committee.
