Mr Robert McDowall
Mr Robert McDowall, whose death, at the age of 63 years, occurred at Queenstown, after a short illness, on Wednesday of last week, had lived in the Wakatipu district for most of his life. Born at St. Leonards, Mr McDowall came to the Wakatipu district with his parents, the late Captain James and Isobcl McDowall, at the age of three years. He was a tailor by trade, and carried out business activities between Arrowtown, Queenstown, and Winton for many years. During the war, when skilled labour was at a premium, his services were acquired by Sargood, Son and Ewen, of Dunedin, and after the end of the war Air McDowall retired from the profession. When a young man, he was a fiitc athlete, and it has been stated that the district has never produced a finer Rugby half-back. Running, cricket, and defence rifle shooting were other sports that Mr McDowall excelled in. A keen musician, he was a member of the Queenstown Band for a great num-ber-of fyears, and his encouragement and advice to younger players was of great service. The interment took' place at the Queenstown Cemetery on Friday, a large number of mourners being present and a great number of floral tributes adorning the casket. The P. C. Williams conducted the service. The Queenstown Municipal Band played a hymn. Mr McDowall is survived by his wife, two daughters (Miss M. McDowall, of Queenstown, and Mrs D. Thorp, of Marlborough), and one son (Mr Andrew McDowall, of Lumsden).
