“ They Came to a City ” has as its theme the reactions of a group of people brought face to face with Utopia. Since few people are agreed in their conception of what Utopia should look like, it has been decided to leave the physical aspects of the City to the audience’s imagination. The film was specially adapted for the screen by Director Basil Deardcu and Associate Producer Sidney Cole, in collaboration with J. B. Priestley. The story follows closely that of the play, although in no sense is it a photograph of the play. Its theme is expressed purely in terms of cinema technique.
Mother: Did you behave nicely? |?lsie: Yes, mother, when a little girl fell off a chair all the others laughed, but I did not laugh. Mother: That was kind of you —why didn’t you laugh ? Rlsie: I was the little girl.
