QUEENSTOWN DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
Shortage of Coal A meeting of the Queenstown District High School Committee was held recently, there being present Messrs R. J. Fuller (chairman), D. R. Rowe, L. C. N. Wilder, L. P. Evans, E. R. Hopwood (secretary), and the Headmaster, Mr J. G. Forbes. The treasurer submitted a statement of the committee’s accounts which revealed a very satisfactory position. Accounts amounting to £B9 3s 5d were passed for payment. The secretary reported that he had received quotations for the installation of extra electrical fittings for the school buildings. It was resolved to forward a copy of the lowest tender to the-Education Board with a request that the work be carried out as soon as possible. It was also resolved to ' apply for the provision of a Zip water heater in the Science room. The Southland Education Board advised that difficulty had been experienced in obtaining a truck of coal for the school. The secretary stated that representations had to be made to the Mining Controller in * order to gain priority of delivery. It was resolved to thank the board for its interest in the matter. On the motion of the chairman it was resolved to withdraw £2O from the Special Fund Account and forward’ it to the Education Board for expenditure on future improvements, to the school grounds. It was reported that considerable trouble had been brought about through defections in the furnaces of the heating system at the school, and that the board had already replaced one furnace with a new one of modern pattern. , Mr I). R. Rowe suggested the advisability of installing a wireless set in % the school for the purpose of receiving school broadcasts, together with the broadcast of speeches made by visiting statesmen and Empire representatives. The headmaster supported the suggestion and mentioned many beneficial aspects of the proposal. It was resolved to make investigations. The headmaster submitted his report for the period which stated that the attendance of pupils had been adversely affected by the prevailing types of influenza. The mid-year survey had been completed which revealed a good standard of attainment in most eases. Interschool basket-ball and football matches had been held with the Cromwell District High School and the Arrowtown Primary School. Mr Forbes drew the committee’s attention to the fact that Avhile the teachers’ room was being used as a Dental Clinic there was no couch where pupils taking sick could be rested, particularly in the case where pupils could not be sent home. It was pointed out that the couch would not be required when the »ew Dental Clinic was erected. Members resolved to make enquiries for a suitable couch or stretcher for temporary use.
