FOOTBALL NOTES
By Scrum-half
Country managed to hold the Teachers’ Cup on Saturday, but many supporters of the club must have had anxious moments during the game. Both teams were below their usual strength, and the coach of each side turned out for his respective team. Payne, Queenstown half-back, played his best game this year, and on Saturday’s showing must be given serious consideration for the Wakatipu team. The Queenstown forwards played their best game for some time. L. Inder, L. Forde, F. Rae and Don Wade toiled hard all day. Bill Dagg, as full-back, played a good game for the Country side. Gordon McLaren, Country forward, has improved out of sight. Cumberbeach, Murdoch and Thwaites gave the Country inside backs little chance of exploiting the open game. N. Grant and L. Inder are both light forwards, but are always on the ball, and in the writer’s opinion are the best forwards in the district.
Alex Robins, who has not played for a year or two, turned on a good loose game and has lost none of his cunning of playing offside. Queenstown inside backs must learn to stab kick. Inability to do this probably cost them the game on' Saturday.
R. Anderson’s leg stood up well tb the game on Saturday. “Rusty” is a valuable back for his side.
