DRAWN RUGBY MATCH

Queenstown Meets Country

After an even display of football, a match between Queenstown and Country, played last Saturday on Country’s ground, resulted in a draw, 8 all. The game was the last round of the competition, and the Teachers Cup, held by the Country, was also at stake. Country won the toss and elected to play with a strong following wind. Showers of rain at intervals, together with the wind, made conditions unpleasant for players and spectators alike. Country immediately attacked and tried hard to open up the game, but good defensive work by the Queenstown team quickly broke up these movements, Spence, the Country half-back, was feeding his backs, but J, Murdoch, who was playing as a loose forward for Queenstown, usually broke the movements up before they got very far.

Country’s First Try The first try to Country came as a result of fast following-up work by J, Reid, who scored right on the deadball line, C. Allan converting. Queenstown backs were finding it hard to make headway against the wind, and from an infringement C. Allan kicked a penalty goal for Country. Just on half time, the Country backs staged a good passing rush, the ball going out to S. McLean, who was brought down by a splendid tackle by the full-back, W.

Robins, when a try seemed imminent. The score board at half time read: Country 8, Queenstown nil. Queenstown Attacks Playing with the wind, Queenstown quickly attacked, and for the greater part of the spell pinned Country in their twenty-five. The Queenstown forwards were winning the ball from the scrums, and Payne wastecT no time in getting his backs in action. Following a kick through, F. Anderson scored under the posts, Murdoch converting. Country whs having/ a solid time in defending their goal line, and had the Queenstown backs not been kicking so hard the score at this stage would have been more to their advantage From a scrum on the twenty-five yards’ line, Payne whipped the ball out to R. Anderson, on to W. Anderson, who went over for a nice try, Queenstown tried hard to clinch the issue in the last ferv minutes of play, J. Murdoch hitting the crossbar with a penalty right on time. Mr J. S. Brown was the referee.
