’■ Highways Board Affairs Explained

Main Highways Board affairs were discussed by Mr D. Cockburn, member of the board, and guest speaker, at the weekly meeting of the Queenstown Rotary Club, held in the Royal Cafe on Tuesday evening, July 22. Mr J, Keen presided. Mr Cockburn traced the activities of the board since its inception and explained how; the special taxes allocated to the Main IHghways account had been insufficient, with the result that the board had, borrowed £14,437,251 from the Consolidated Fund. Representations he said were being made to the Minister for the writing off of the on this amount, A small portion had be written oft last year. My Cockburn referred to the policy of the board and stated that sealing and rescaling would be carried ouj; to the greatest extent with the limited re■sources available. The speaker also stated that it was estimated that fd a 'mile was saved by motorists haying tar sealed roads.
