Helicopter Service For Rural Areas is Premature

The importation, of helicopters for use in outlying districts of New Zealand for air-taxi, airrescue or air-ambulance work, is considered by the Government to be premature at the present time, according to the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, in Parliament. Mr Jones was replying to a suggestion made by Mr T. L. MacDonald, National member for Wallace. “Consideration has been given to the purchase of helicopters, and th.e developments in the United States and the United Kingdom are being closely followed by the Air Department,” said Mr Jones. “ These aircraft are still, however, extremely expensive and the cost of upkeep is high. The Government considers it premature at the nresent time to import helicopters.”
