OBITUARY
Mr W. H. Powell
The sudden death of William Henry PoweH in his eighty-second year has deprived Queenstown of one of its oldest inhabitants. Born at Invercargill in 1806, the late Mr Powell came to Queenstown at the age of three years nine months, when bullock wagons were the only mode of transport. Educated at the local school, Mr Powell later became a clerk in the store of Lois de Beer (now Marshall’s store) and was for a number of years a member of the staff of the firm of the D.1.C., Dunedin. He later spent 20 years in .Australia and as a youth being a proficient billiard expert, he became an official marker for many international contests. Returning to New Zealand he led a retired life, but took an active interest in the local Amateur Athletic Club, being president for many years and patron of the club at the time of hi® „*£eath. Mr Powell was very well read and had a wonderful recollection of early happenings. Accordingly, many journalists sought his knowledge. Mr Powell is survived by one brother, Mr James Powell, of Dunedin.
