GIRLS’ SPORTS CLUB

Notes and Comments by “ Yankee ”

A very successful dance, was held in the Royal Cafe on Saturday evening in aid of the sports funds. A guessing competition was won by Miss T. Dagg, and two Monte Carlos that were held during the evening were won by Mr and Mrs L. G. Lynch and Mr and Mrs W. E. Robins. The weekly competitions have been going off very well and last Wednesday’s games were some of the best we have seen this season. The goals to Isabel Jones and Phyllis Downeys especially, from far out in the centre, were very clean and pretty scores. Players should remember to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible. Do not give your opponents the chance to get in position especially when the play is in the opponents’ scoring base. Another point is to try to take and send the ball cleanly and watch the foot movements. There was more whistle for progress than any other infringement last week. The short, snappy passes rather than the long, high ones will get a ball to your goal better, Mrs Wilson, hopes to bring up a trophy when next she is able to visit Queenstown, and this should prove a help in the local contests. The club has been asked by Dunedin to send down a team to compete in a Town v. Country tournament at a date to be fixed in the near future. The club has also a visit from Mossburn and St. Marys to look forward to and altogether the club anticipates a busy and successful season. The scores for the weekly competition arc as follows: — July 16. —Team 1 defeated Team 2, 15-14; Team 3 drew with Team 1, 10-10; Team 3 defeated Team 2, 16-14. July 9. —Team 1 defeated Team 2, 8-4; Team 2 defeated Team 3, 13-8; Team 3 drew with Team 1, 10-10. July 2. —Team 4 defeated Team 1, 10-6; Team 2 defeated Team 3, 17-12; Team 1 defeated Team 3, 12-6; Team 2 drew with Team 4, 11-11.
