AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB
Assistance from Physical Welfare
Officer
At a meeting of the Queenstown Amateur Athletic Club, the following members were present: —Mr C. G. Roderique, president, in the chair, Messrs T. Donaldson, Grant Forbes, J. McKinney, R. C. Robins, M. T. Robertson, J. Thompson jun., and C. M. Inglis (secretary).
Mr T. Allen, instructor of the Physical Welfare Department, was present by invitation, through an application having been lodged with the Internal Affairs Department, asking that a representative be sent to Queenstown, to assist in the training and selecting of equipment for the club. Mr Allen discussed at length the possibilities of encouraging field events, and enlightened the committee on several points. He stated that he would be available to come to Queenstown for two nights a Aveek as from the beginning of November, and suggested that a preliminary meeting could probably be staged at the end of that month. Mr Allen also made the suggestion that it might be possible to arrange an interclub contest with, say, Alexandra, at a later date.
On the motion of Messrs J. Thompson, jun., and Grant Forbes, it was resolved to purchase £l7 worth of sports material, including three sets each of javelins and discus, as recommended by Mr Allen. It was also agreed to have made locally other essentials, including a hammer and broad jump equipment. Mr Grant Forbes suggested that field events should be arranged in conjunction with the bye of the Queenstown Football Club, and it was decided to ask the officials and club members to co-operate in this respect. The Otago Centre of the Kew Zealand Amateur Athletic Association wrote stating that it hoped to have a team of Australians touring Otago during next summer, and asked if the club would give its support and alter the date of its fixture to correspond if Queenstown was included in this team’s itinerary. It was decided to advise the Otago Centre that the club was definitely interested, and asking for more information regarding financial help and accommodation required. A vote expressing the thanks of the committee was passed to Mr Allen for the guidance and information that he had supplied.
