WAR MEMORIAL

A public meeting was held in the Athemeum Flail, Arrowtown, on Wednesday. May 2S at S p.m., for the purpose of considering and deciding what form the War Memorial should take. Mr J. W. Reed presided. The attendance though fair, was not fully representative of the town and district. Apologies for absence were received from' Mrs J. W. Reed and Messrs D. H. Cockhiirn, W. R. .Saunders and Jas. Shaw.

The minutes of the lirst public meetim i were read and confirmed. The lirsi business was what form the memoria should take, and after- some discussioi it was decided that swimming baths wit] memorial entrance gates should be tin memorial for those who had paid the supreme sacrifice in the Second World War. The secretary, Mr W. J. .Shaw, read communications from the Governnient regarding subsidies, also data that had been procured re costs, etc. After discussion it was decided that the committee be more representative, and it was carried that the original committee he re-elected with the addition of the following members;— Messrs W. FT. Thompson. C. R. Scott, R. Shaw, T. Houston, and G. Douglas. COMMITTEE MEETING The following members were present: —Messrs J. W. Reed. E. L. Thompson, D, E. Rowe, R. Shaw, G. Douglas, J. Fletcher, C. R. Scott, M. Elliott. T. Houston, and W. J, Shaw. AFi- E. L. Thompson, the Mayor, chairman, and Mr W. J. Shaw, secretary, were re-elected. It was decided that the secretary write to the Education Board inquiring’if tbc board would grant a title to the school gate for the War Memorial Baths, as it is a condition of granting of subsidy by the Government that tlie local authorities should bold title to the laud on which memorials were to be erected. It was moved that failing a favourable reply from the Education . Board, the committee approach the bowling club and Borough Council, re unused portions of the bowling club’s ground. The following members of the committee were elected to go into the question of costs, estimates, etc., and means of raising the necessary finance, there being approximately £224 in band:— Messrs J. W. Reed, E. L. Thompson, W. J. Sbaw,; J. Fletcher, and M. Elliot. It was moved that estimates be procured for baths 100 feet by 37 feet (! inches. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
