HARD LUCK!
A paragraph was published recently how a returned soldier settler in Hawke's Bay calmly received the news of his sudden accession to wealth through a lottery. In connection with this draw there occurred a little drama with a man who did not win in the leading role. The story is pathetic. A clerk employed in an office in Napier was communicated with over the phone by an agent. " You have won £4200," were the words that came to his ears. The clerk was incredulous. "For God's sake don't joke with me," he gasped. " There is no joke," replied the agent. " I have the cable in my hand. The number is 77111." Shortly afterward the agent rang again, and informed the dork that tho carbon copy of the cable was faint and that the correct number was 77110,,he1d by the abovementioned returned soldier. So violent, was tho reaction that the clerk suffered\ a bvain attack and was in bed for days.
