A letter from Mr James Stewart, complaining of the bad state of the road between Helensville and Kaukapakapa, and claiming £2 10s for damage to his motor car, was read at the last meeting of the Waitemata County Council. The letter was " received."

The Dargaville boat on Sunday last brought down between 70 and 80 pa«sengers and the numerous local iaxi owners all got a load for Auckland. They were all shaking hands with themselves in consequence, after experiencing many Sunday afternoon waits. The meeting ot the Helensville Regatta Committee, called for Thursday evening last was poorly attended. It was decided to hold another meeting on Friday, January 7th, and it is hoped that more interest will be taken, and that a good attendance of members and intending members will result. The feature at Everybody's this week will be a Charles Ray Comedy-drama styled "HayfootStrawfoot. Charles Ray is one .of the most popular male artists appearing on the screen, and this picture is stated to be worth while. In addition will be. shown a Briggs comedy "Burglars," and the usual topical gazettes. Numerous complaints of boys riding bicycles around the paths at the Hot Springs Domain have been made by visitons.and warnings to thes« youngsters have not always had the desired effect. An example should be made of some of the offenders. Some of the visitors undergoing treatment are not very active, and having to move hurriedly out of the road of a bicycle would not tend, to improve their health. The local schools broke up for the Christmas vacation on Thursday last, and will resume again on February 2nd. The Helensville school picnic was held on tb£ Showgrounds on Saturday last in beautiful weather, and the large number of children present spent a splendid day. Every child was the recipient of a present, and the "grow^-ups" who assisted to make the children's day such a pleasant one are deserving of grateful thanks.

A visitor to Helensville at present is * y Mr P. H. Sarsfield, nephew of the late Captain James MacMahon, one time of Woodlands, Parkhurst. Mr Sarsfield it a comedian and entertainer, and has travelled extensively, including a period with the N. Z. Brigade Entertainers in France, He is touring Canada and the States in February next with an original New Zealand scenic act, with slides supplied by the Dominion Tourist office.

At this festive season everyone is on the look out for suitable gifts for relatives or dear friends, and the enterprising ehopkeepers display their choicest wares in the most attractive manner, in order to enable their numerous customers to choose and purchase what they require with ease and pleasure. Screaton's Gentral Stores are no exception to this rule, for they have one of the most attractive displays of seasonable gifts and useful articles of wearing apparel in their several departments provided for ladies and gentlemen. We would draw attention to this firms replace advertisement in this issue, which will be found of great interest to the public generally.

With a hearty good wish to all fora jolly Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. —C. O. Ketterer, Watchmaker and Jeweller, Helensville.*
