SEND OFF AT GLORIT.
On Friday evening last a pleasant function took place at the Glorit schoolroom, when over fifty of the residents of the district assembled to bid farewell to Mr Gordon Mather, who is proceeding ' to Taranaki this week to take up farming ( pursuits on his own account, at Toko, near Stratford. On behalf of the settlers, Mr Harry Hooper made the guest of the evening two most acceptable pre- • sentationa, to wit, a morocco-bound ; travelling-companion, and a pipe and case. The esteem with which the Maoris of the district have always regarded Gordon was manifested by Mr Dave Kapia, who presented the departing gueat, on behalf of his brethren, ' with a finely carved walking stick, a i work of art which took one elderly Maori nearly twelve months to complete;' Loud applause greeted the recipient of these gifts, who suitably returned thanks, Supper was afterwards provided by the ladies, and dancing, of course, indulged : in till the early hours.
Mr Mather, who has proved a tower of strength to the football team this season, will be missod in this direction, and all other circles where sport holds sway in this district.
